There are significant differences between nitrile, PVC, and latex gloves, yet many people consistently choose the wrong ones.

Disposable gloves are a household staple for many. However, many people buy them based solely on price, only to discover later that some tear easily while others cause itching. What exactly are the differences between nitrile gloves, PVC plastic gloves, and natural latex gloves?

Let’s first understand the raw materials used for each type.

Natural latex gloves are made from natural rubber harvested from rubber trees; their main component is polyisoprene. Their advantages include high elasticity and a snug fit. The biggest drawback is the risk of latex protein allergies; many people experience red spots or itching after wearing them for this reason. Additionally, latex degrades quickly when exposed to oils, making it unsuitable for greasy kitchen environments.

PVC plastic gloves—commonly referred to simply as “plastic gloves”—are made from polyvinyl chloride. Plasticizers are used during production to make them soft. Their main advantage is their very low cost; they are often the type included with food delivery orders. However, they have significant downsides: they are vulnerable to oil. Contact with cooking oil causes them to harden and become brittle, leading them to tear easily with a light tug. They are suitable only for basic protection against dust, not for cooking.

Nitrile gloves are made from a synthetic rubber known chemically as acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber. They contain no latex proteins, so they do not trigger latex allergies. Their properties can be adjusted by varying the acrylonitrile content: higher acrylonitrile levels improve resistance to oil and cleaning agents but make the gloves stiffer, while lower levels result in a softer feel but slightly reduced oil resistance. This versatility is why nitrile gloves are widely used in the food service industry and laboratories.

Here is how to choose the right glove for different situations:

1. Cooking, handling raw food, or baking: Opt for food-grade nitrile gloves; they are oil-resistant, durable, and allergy-safe.

2. General housework (wiping surfaces, scrubbing fixtures, or handling disinfectants and detergents): Choose thicker nitrile gloves for better corrosion resistance and durability.

3. If you have a latex allergy: Avoid natural latex gloves entirely.

4. PVC plastic gloves: Use these only for quick, light tasks—such as opening packages—rather than for cooking or handling greasy foods. Here are two common misconceptions to keep in mind. First, disposable gloves should not be reused; when polymer materials come into contact with grease or cleaning agents, the molecules degrade, significantly compromising their protective performance. Second, simply being made of nitrile doesn’t guarantee a high-quality glove; you need to check for food-contact certification, as there are inferior nitrile gloves on the market that lack elasticity and tear easily.

Many households buy large quantities of cheap PVC gloves for cooking, but these gloves often tear upon contact with grease, rendering them useless. The right approach is to understand the materials and purchase gloves based on your specific needs.
